Tennis is now firmly established within the Olympic family, although it hasn’t always been that way. Many people don't realise that tennis was one of the original sports at Athens 1896, the first modern Olympics, and continued to be contested until Paris 1924, but then disputes between the International Olympic Committee and the International Lawn Tennis Federation, now the ITF, ended with tennis being withdrawn.

Following demonstration/exhibition events at Mexico City 1968 and Los Angeles 1984, tennis was finally reinstated as a medal sport at Seoul 1988. Since then, the Olympic Tennis Event has gone from strength to strength and a gold medal is now one of the most coveted prizes in the game for today's star names.
