Belgium and Serbia have never previously met. However, players from Serbia used to compete under the combined flag of Yugoslavia, and Belgium and Yugoslavia have faced each other on two occasions. The Belgians won both times, in 1975 and 1991.
Belgium have lifted the Fed Cup trophy once before, in 2001, when a dream team of Justine Henin and Kim Clijsters combined to defeat Russia in the Final. Henin has since retired, but Clijsters is still playing and her availability in this year’s campaign is likely to be the key element that defines Belgium’s title credentials. In 2011, they lost to eventual champions Czech Republic in the semifinals.
Serbia also possess the fire power to go a long way in this year’s competition. This is only their second appearance in the top division of Fed Cup and they are yet to go past the first round. They gained promotion back to the World Group last season with wins over Canada and Slovak Republic.
