Italy possess an unbeaten 3-0 win-loss record against Ukraine. The Italians won their first meeting in 1997 and followed this up with further victories in 2008 and 2010. The latest of these ties, in Kharkiv, was also a World Group first round clash.
Italy enjoyed a golden period at the end of the 2000s as they, led by Francesca Schiavone and Flavia Pennetta, triumphed three times in five years. They bowed out to Russia in the semifinals last year when their top two players were unavailable.
Since gaining promotion to World Group II for the first time in 2007, Ukraine have gone on to bounce between Fed Cup’s top two divisions. Following another promotion in 2011, this will be their second appearance in the World Group with their only previous outing that defeat against Italy two years ago.
