Japan and Slovenia have faced each other twice before, in 1999 and 2010, and both were World Group II play-off ties. Japan won the first of these fixtures 2-1, but Slovenia prevailed 4-1 when the teams met two years ago in Maribor.
Japan gained promotion back to World Group II last season after a two-year absence. They won five ties to seal their passage out of Asia/Oceania Zone Group I. Japan are playing their second straight tie at the Bourbon Beans Dome in Hyogo.
Slovenia were promoted to World Group II in 2010 and consolidated that position last year when they avoided relegation by claiming a deciding fifth rubber win over Canada.
