  • Tie Summary

Switzerland and Belarus are tied at 1-1 in the head to head having met previously in the round robin stages of Europe/Africa Zone Group I – a place they will be fighting to avoid a return to in this encounter.

Switzerland began life without Fed Cup stalwart Patty Schnyder in rather unceremonious style with a 4-1 defeat at the hands of Australia. The team sorely missed some veteran leadership with no player over the age of 22 in the team. Having been promoted last year they will be looking to extend their stay beyond one season.

With an injury to world No.1 Victoria Azarenka there was little hope for Belarus against a USA team that featured both Serena and Venus Williams for the first time since 2007. The European nation was duly dispatched to a 5-0 score line. The result exposed the lack of depth in the squad but the experience should have taught much to a side who had languished in the zonal groups for over a decade.
