  • Tie Summary

Australia and Switzerland will meet for the second year running as they face off in the World Group play-offs in Australia. These two have met on six previous occasions, including in the World Group II first round last year, with Australia winning five times. The hosts' only defeat came on the clay of Zurich in 1983.

Seven-time champions Australia will look to avoid slipping back into World Group II after working so hard to reach the top tier with wins over Switzerland and Germany last year. New captain Alicia Molik saw her team convincingly beaten by Czech Republic in the World Group first round as Sam Stosur fell to both Lucie Safarova and Petra Kvitova, with Jarmila Gajdosova also falling to the Czech No. 1.

Switzerland stunned Belgium 4-1 in Bern in the World Group II first round as Romina Oprandi stole the limelight on her Fed Cup debut, scoring two singles wins to overturn a 1-0 deficit before Stefanie Voegele clinched a memorable triumph for the hosts.
