  • Tie Summary

Switzerland and Belgium have met on four previous occasions in Fed Cup competition with the former having won three of them. However, they have not met since 1989 and have also never met in a best-of-5 rubber format.

The Swiss maintained their position in World Group II last year with victory over Belarus in Yverdon-les-Bains thanks to two victories from Stefanie Voegele and another from Timea Bacsinszky. They had previously suffered a 4-1 defeat at home against Australia that had forced them into the World Group II play-offs to fight to extend their stay in the division beyond one year.

Belgium had their two year stay in the World Group ended last season with losses against Serbia and Japan. Two victories from Yanina Wickmayer against Serbia had put Belgium on the brink of progressing once more to the semifinals but partnering Alison van Uytvanck in the doubles fell agonisingly short. Missing many of their top players they were then comprehensively beaten by Japan in the play-off.
