France and Germany have met regularly in Fed Cup since they first played each other in the inaugural competition back in 1963. France have had the better of the rivalry in recent times having won both meetings this century including a World Group play-off tie in 2010 in which they came from 2-1 behind to snatch victory.
France had to fight to stave off a second straight relegation in Fed Cup having never previously dropped below the World Group after they lost their first round match against Slovak Republic. Hosting Slovenia in the play-offs proved a much easier task for the French, however, and victories in singles for Virginie Razzano and Pauline Partmentier sent them on their way to a 5-0 whitewash.
Germany were relegated from the World Group in 2012 having been dealt a tough draw facing Czech Republic in the first round and Australia in the play-offs. Petra Kvitova showed her class on indoor courts in the former tie while fellow Grand Slam champion Samantha Stosur was Germany’s foil in the latter.
