Kazakhstan travels to France seeking to win promotion to World Group II for the first time in the first meeting between the two sides. The visitors are eyeing the prize of leaving behind Asia/Oceania Zone Group I after four successive years at this level. France, meanwhile, will be desperate to maintain their World Group II status as Amelie Mauresmo looks to build a promising new era for the side.
France suffered a convincing defeat to Germany in the World Group II first round as the visitors wrapped up the first three rubbers without dropping so much as a set. Marion Bartoli was unable to make her much-anticipated comeback for France after a bout of flu, leaving replacement Pauline Parmentier to take the brunt of the pressure as two wins for Julia Goerges and a win for Sabine Lisicki saw Germany into the play-offs.
Kazakhstan made up for the disappointment of losing the Asia/Oceania Group I promotional play-off in 2012 by defeating Uzbekistan 2-1 in 2013. Wins for Ksenia Pervak in singles and Yaroslava Shvedova and Galina Voskoboeva in the doubles handed the hosts a shot at World Group II.
