  • Tie Summary

Romania edged past Serbia in a tight World Group II play-off to climb out of the Zone Groups and take its place amongst the competition's elite. Sorana Cirstea defeated 2008 French Open champion Ana Ivanovic in three sets before rain stopped Simona Halep's matchup with Bojana Jovanovski mid-way through the first set. Halep returned the following morning to win in straight sets, but then succumbed to a defeat to Ivanovic as the effort required to play two matches back-to-back took its toll. It was left to Cirstea to see if she was able to close out the tie against Jovanovski. After a positive start, the Romanian squandered match points in the second set before eventually coming through in the final set to win and consign Serbia to relegation. The Serbian team must now compete in Europe/Africa Zone Group I in its quest to return to the highest level.
