  • Tie Summary

Netherlands will play in World Group II next year after securing promotion with a solid win against a tricky Japanese side. Paul Haarhuis' team is now at its highest level for 15 years, thanks to the efforts of Kiki Bertens and Arantxa Rus. Bertens levelled the tie at 1-1 with a straight sets win over Misaki Doi, after Rus had been defeated in three tight sets against Kurumi Nara. And in a dramatic clash with Nara in the third rubber, Bertens came out on top, winning 97 in the final set. This left the tie in the hands of Rus, and she did not disappoint, winning in straight sets against Doi to seal Netherlands' promotion. Japan must return to Asia/Oceania Zone Group I next season.
