A pair of marathon victories from Andrea Petkovic sealed Germany's place in the semifinals as they overcame Australia.
The tie started poorly for Germany as Australia's Jarmila Gajdosova recorded a surprise 46 62 64 victory over German No. 1 Angelique Kerber. The second rubber saw Petkovic take on Australian No. 1 Sam Stosur.
The pair split the opening sets and were still tied at 6-6 in the third. Petkovic eventually prevailed 64 36 1210 to level the tie at the end of Day 1.
The effects of that match told on Day 2 as Kerber easily overcame Stosur 62 64 before Petkovic took on Gajdosova. Once again the pair split the first two sets and were tied at 6-6 in the third. And again, Petkovic prevailed winning 63 36 86 to seal germany's victory.
Julia Goerges and Sabine Lisicki then won a tight doubles rubber 67(2) 76(7) [10-6] in a match tiebreak.
