  • Tie Summary

A strong USA side, featuring both Williams sisters, had little trouble getting past Argentina and booking a place in the World Group play-offs.

Venus Williams began the tie with a 63 62 win over Paula Ormaechea before world No. 1 Serena Williams overcame Maria Irigoyen 75 60.

Illness forced Serena out of Day 2 and CoCo Vandeweghe stepped in to take on Ormaechea. However, it was the Argentinian who prevailed on her favourite surface, winning 64 64 to give her side a glimmer of hope.

That hope was extinguished in the following rubber when a determined Venus Williams surged past Irigoyen 61 64 to seal USA's victory.

Taylor Townsend teamed up with Vandeweghe for the dead doubles rubber and the American pair easily overcame Tatiana Bua and Nadia Podoroska 62 63 to give USA a 4-1 win.
