Switzerland overcame a strong German team - including newly crowned Australian Open champion Angelique Kerber - to book a place in the Fed Cup semifinals in April.
Belinda Bencic was on top form for the Swiss, a straight sets win over Andrea Petkovic followed up with a triumph over Kerber the following day. Timea Bacsinszky could not match her compatriot's form, losing first to Kerber then to Annika Beck, meaning that the tie would be settled in the doubles rubber.
Here, Bencic returned to court alongside Martina Hingis, and the pair eased past Petkovic and Anna-Lena Groenefeld to give Switzerland a chance of reaching its first Fed Cup final since 1998. Germany, meanwhile, must win a play-off in April to stay in the World Group next year.
