  • Tie Summary

Netherlands pulled off one of the biggest surprises in Fed Cup history, defeating Russia - which has won the title four times and was runner-up in 2015 - in Moscow to advance to the semifinals.

Kiki Bertens defeated Ekaterina Makarova to get the ball rolling for the away side, before Richel Hogenkamp overcame Svetlana Kuznetsova in the longest match in Fed Cup history: the players were on court for exactly four hours, beating the previous record by 11 minutes.

On Sunday, Bertens beat a clearly exhausted Kuznetsova to complete a famous win for the Dutch. While they now have a chance of reaching a first final since 1997, Russia must compete in a World Group play-off to maintain its place among the elite.
