SHENZHEN, CHINA: The action got underway on Monday at the Fed Cup by BNP Paribas Asia/Oceania Zone Group II event, being held at the Shenzhen Luohu Tennis Center in Shenzhen, China. Kyrgyzstan and Singapore got off to a winning start in Pool A, while India and Turkmenistan both opened with a victory in Pool B.
Kyrgyzstan didn’t drop a set during their 3-0 triumph over Pakistan. Inna Volkovich defeated Ushna Suhail 64 63 in the first rubber, before the team’s No. 1 player Bermet Duvanaeva pushed Kyrgyzstan into an unassailable lead by easing past Saba Aziz 61 61 in just 46 minutes. The two players then combined in the doubles to secure the whitewash.
Singapore were involved in a more closely contested tie with Sri Lanka, eventually prevailing 2-1 when Geraldine Ang and Olivia Koh Ee Yi teamed up to win the deciding doubles rubber against Nilushi and Roshenka Fernando 64 64. Earlier in the day, Hannah Chew put Singapore ahead before Thisuri Molligoda drew Sri Lanka level.
India lost just two games during their 3-0 win over Iran, with Rutuja Bhosale, Prerna Bhambri and Iska Laskhani inflicting the damage on the lower ranked Iranian team. Turkmenistan’s 2-1 victory against Oman was decided in the doubles rubber as the partnership of Jenneta Halliyeva and Anastasiya Prenko came from a set down to beat Sarah Al Balushi and Fatma Al Nabhani 57 61 61.
The format of the event sees the ten competing nations form two round-robin pools of five, taking place from Monday to Friday, with promotion decided on Saturday in a play-off tie between the two pool leaders. The event is being staged alongside Asia/Oceania Zone Group I, which starts on Wednesday as there are only seven nations involved.
