CAIRO, EGYPT: Morocco confirmed themselves as the winners of Pool A on Thursday in Fed Cup by BNP Paribas Zone Group III action when they saw off Armenia 2-1in one of the most dramatic ties of the week.
Fatima El Allami had put her side ahead before Armenia’s Ani Amiraghyan won comfortably against Nadia Lalami 63 60 to level the tie and send it to a deciding doubles. Morocco sent in Fatyha Berjane and Bahia Mouhtassine who took a tight first set tiebreak but let their opponents back into the match by dropping the second. They regained their composure in the final set, however, dispatching Amiraghyan and Anna Movsisyan 76(5) 46 61.
Ireland will join Morocco from Pool A in the promotion play-off tomorrow after they defeated Kenya in one of the more one-sided contests of the week. The Irish needed less than 2 hours on court in total over the three rubbers as they dropped just two games in six sets.
Tunisia and Lithuania had already been confirmed as the nations to progress from Pool B but Tunisia will be the nation going into Saturday’s matches with the greater confidence having beaten Lithuania 2-1 in the final round-robin match. Nour Abbes and Ons Jabeur onec again both triumphed in their singles rubbers as they have done all week to hand the tie to Tunisia.
Those results mean that Morocco will face Lithuania and Ireland play Tunisia with the winners of the ties gaining promotion to Europe/Africa Zone Group II.
In the other two matches being played from Pool B on Friday hosts Egypt defeated Moldova 3-0 to remain in third place in the group while Cyprus won their first tie in 14 attempts and only second in their history when they beat Namibia.
