GUADALAJARA, MÉXICO: Hosts Mexico beat Puerto Rico 2-1 in the most surprising result of the fourth day of play in the Round Robin of the Group II American Zone that is being held at the San Javier Club Privado in Guadalajara.
In the first match, Marcela Zacarias earned the first point for Mexico after beating Puerto Rico’s Yolimar Ogando 62 61. Zacarias was very focused during the match and her display was full of confidence and determination.
The second player to play for Mexico was Ana Sofia Sanchez, who had the difficult task of facing Monica Puig, unbeaten in this Round Robin. Sanchez played at a very high level but in the end Puig imposed her tennis and took the match 63 75. The local crowd that filled the stands in Guadalajara was very satisfied with the performance of the local player despite the loss.
Everything was to be decided in the doubles rubber between Mexico’s Ana Paula de la Peña/Marcela Zacarias and Puerto Rico’s Monica Puig/Yolimar Ogando. The match was very intense and Mexico eventually prevailed after three tough sets 62 36 75.
Now Mexico will play Uruguay for a chance to reach the playoffs.
In the other tie in Pool B Chile beat Uruguay 3-0 and lead the group with only one tie left to play.
Chile’s Cecilia Costa and Uruguay’s Ana Lucia Migliarini played the most contested match of the tie that ended with a 57 63 62 victory for the Chilean.
Chile only dropped two games in the two remaining rubbers and sealed a comprehensive victory that puts them on top of the table in Pool B.
Thursday saw the last day of action in Pool A of the Round Robin. Trinidad and Tobago and Guatemala have finished first and second in the table respectively and will compete in the playoffs on Saturday for promotion to Group I.
Trinidad and Tobago beat Guatemala and kept their unbeaten condition in a Round Robin in which they have only dropped 3 sets out of 21. Their rival in the playoffs will be the runner-up in Pool B.
Despite the defeat in the final day, Guatemala also booked their place in the playoffs as runner-ups of their Pool.
In the other tie in Pool A, Ecuador beat Dominican Republic 2-1 in a tie that had a quick ending after the Ecuadorians got the victory in the first two singles matches.
