GUADALAJARA, MÉXICO: Hosts Mexico got off to a perfect start in the first day of the Fed Cup by BNP Paribas Group II Round Robin that is being held at the Club San Javier in Guadalajara after winning the two single matches of their tie againt Costa Rica.
The first players to step into court were the twice National Tennis Champion of Mexico, Marcela Zacarias and the Costa Rican Mariela Haug. The Mexican No. 1 lost her two first service games with a series of double faults and unforced errors but from the fifth game on she started to find her game and won the last two games to close the first set 64.
Zacarias was even more solid in the second set and found little opposition from Haug that conceded defeat with a score of 62 61 in 1 hour and 11 minutes.
The second match saw Ana Sofia Sanchez from Mexico take on Costa Rica’s Ximena Mino. The first set was clearly won by the Mexican 62 and the second one was following the same pattern as the local player was winning it 4-1. However, Costa Rica’s Mino reacted and forced the left-handed Mexican to play her best tennis to complete the victory after a very contested second set 62 75 in slightly less than two hours.
“I felt very nervous at the beginning as it was my first Fed Cup match and also I wasn’t being able to hit the ball hard because she was making very weak returns. It was hard for me to adapt to her style, but in the end I won, now I feel more confident for tomorrow”, said Zacarias.
Ana Sofia Sanchez was also very satisfied after giving Mexico the first point of the competition in her debut in Fed Cup.
“I’m very happy, I felt very well playing, very focused, but in the second set, when I was leading, I felt very nervous and I lot of things crossed my mind, I started to think that I was going to give my team the victory and I lost concentration, the good thing is that we won.”
