GUADALAJARA, MEXICO: Mexico’s Carolina Betacourt and Ana Sofia Sánchez could not repeat the success of the first day and lost to Chile´s Cecilia Costa and Andrea Koch 3-0 in the second day of the Round Robin that is taking place at the San Javier Club privado in Guadalajara, México.
Betancourt, who had her debut in the competition, could not match the consistency and power of Costa, who controlled the match from the very beginning earning a clear victory 60 61 in 58 minutes.
The Chilean played almost perfectly, rarely conceding a point and never giving a chance for the Mexican to get into the match.
The second match between Sanchez and Koch was more contested. Although the score was 63 61, it does not reflect the reality of the match as Sanchez played at a very high level.
Mexico´s captain Raquel Contreras was still optimist despite the negative result.
“We need to stick to the original plan and keep working, it´s a Round Robin, so nothing is lost yet,” said Contreras.
Asked for the reason why Marcela Zacarias was not chosen to play, she replied: “I have a 4-player team and yesterday (Monday) Marcela had her chance and today it was Carol´s chance.”
In the other Pool B match, Puerto Rico earned a comprehensive 3-0 victory over Costa Rica that puts them on top of the table after the first two days of competition.
Puerto Rico´s Ana Cordero and Mariela Haug played the most contested match of the tie as they fought to win the first singles point. Haug won the first set and was very close to the victory in the second set tie-break, but Cordero held her nerve and earned a very suspenseful win 36 76(4) 64. The second singles match and the doubles were an easier affair and Mónica Puig beat Ximena Mino 61 60 and the pair Puig/Yolimar Ogando beat Haug/Juli Raventos 63 61 to seal the 3-0 victory.
In Pool A Guatemala and Trinidad and Tobago got off to a winning start after both earned comprehensive 3-0 victories over Dominican Republic and Ecuador respectively.
