Review our game by game coverage of the third rubber between Melanie Oudin and Francesca Schiavone at the Fed Cup by BNP Paribas Final in San Diego.

Oudin 6-3 6-1 Schiavone

An ace clinches it for Oudin, as she gets the Americans off the mark with a sublime victory over an out-of-sorts Schiavone. It's game on in San Diego. Can CoCo Vandeweghe produce another shock against Pennetta. They're next up.

*Oudin 6-3 5-1 Schiavone

This is all over... nearly. Schiavone made two terrible errors to lose her serve. The first a backhand that bounced before the net and then a forehand off the frame that sailed long. I wonder if Mary Joe is regretting her decision not to pick Oudin on the first day!

Oudin 6-3 4-1 *Schiavone

Schiavone wins the first point, but Oudin bounces back to claim the next four and she's just two games away from getting USA off the mark in this Final. It's turning into a fantastic performance from Oudin.

*Oudin 6-3 3-1 Schiavone

That's better from the Italian. She holds to love. Is this the start of a comeback? The next game is massive. Oudin needs to keep Schiavone at arm's length.

Oudin 6-3 3-0 *Schiavone

What is wrong with Schiavone? Oudin holds after a deuce game. Schiavone launched a backhand return long on game point.

*Oudin 6-3 2-0 Schiavone

Four more errors from Schiavone - including a double fault - and Oudin breaks to love. The Italian is "totally at sea", says Craig Gabriel on Fed Cup Radio.

Oudin 6-3 1-0 *Schiavone

Oudin holds and Schiavone's got a big job on her hands now. The American is fired up and the San Diego crowd are right behind her. If I didn't know better, I wouldn't believe that Schiavone is the reigning Roland Garros champion on this display.

*Oudin 6-3 0-0 Schiavone

Schiavone has had a shocker in the last few games. She's spraying the ball all over the place. Fair play to Oudin though, other than a few forehand errors she's played solidly and forced the Italian to hit winners. Pennetta has just left the arena to get ready for the fourth rubber. I reckon she thought that wouldn't be necessary at the start of the day, but it's certainly a possibility now!

Oudin 5-3 *Schiavone

A hold from Oudin! Her forehand has been her achilles heel so far and she missed another easy one in that game at 40-30. It didn't matter in the end - two points later and she's one game from the set.

*Oudin 4-3 Schiavone

It's not been a classic serving display by either player. The fifth straight break of serve hands the advantage back to Oudin. She needs to consolidate the lead now with a hold.

Oudin 3-3 *Schiavone

Another break. Schiavone struck a winning forehand at 30-30 and then Oudin shanked a backhand wide on the next point. The action that Schiavone gets on the ball is impressive.

*Oudin 3-2 Schiavone

Schiavone saves a break point with a majestic backhand winner down the line but it's not enough. A double fault and a forehand error and Oudin takes the lead again.

Oudin 2-2 *Schiavone

Oh dear! Oudin throws away the advantage with four forehand errors. Schiavone made a bad hawk-eye challenge at 15-40 with the ball cleaning the line. But no harm done.

*Oudin 2-1 Schiavone

"C'monnnnnnn" is the rallying call from Oudin as she breaks on her fourth opportunity. First blood to the American and high fives from Mary Joe. The crowd is warming up as well.

Oudin 1-1 *Schiavone

The first hawk-eye challenge of the match gives Oudin the game. She struck a sweet ace down the middle at 40-30, landing right on the T. The American doesn't look to be moving as freely as usual, though.

*Oudin 0-1 Schiavone

Oudin makes a great start, crunching an inside out backhand return onto the baseline on the first point. But the Italian wins the next four points to start with a comfortable hold.

Oudin 0-0 *Schiavone

Schiavone to open the serving. The pressure is stacked on Oudin... only a win will do.

Now that the formalities have been completed we're ready for some tennis! Oudin and Schiavone take to the court and Billie joins them to toss the coin. The players are warming up so we're only a few moments away...

Billie Jean King has just been presented with the 2010 Fed Cup Award of Excellence on court. A special moment to recognise a special person. Congrats Billie... well deserved for many years of extraordinary service to the game and to Fed Cup.

The teams are out and the anthems have been sung. Not a full house in the San Diego Sports Arena but the folks that have come along are making plenty of noise, including a strong Italian contingent.
