As it happened: Schiavone defeats Vandeweghe

Look back at the action in the first rubber of the Fed Cup by BNP Paribas Final, when Francesca Schiavone gave Italy the early lead over USA.

ITALY leads 1-0

Vandeweghe *2-6 4-6 Schiavone

Schiavone serves it out and the defending champions take a 1-0 lead. The pressure is firmly on Bethanie Mattek-Sands now - she faces Flavia Pennetta in the second rubber.

Vandeweghe *2-6 4-5 Schiavone

Vandeweghe can’t consolidate on her break and Schiavone breaks again to ensure she will be serving for the match.

Vandeweghe 2-6 4-4* Schiavone

Two double faults bring up three break points for Vandeweghe, which she duly converts on her last attempt to level proceedings in the second set.

Vandeweghe *2-6 3-4 Schiavone

The 6’1’’ American is playing much better tennis – forcing Schiavone onto the defensive and winning more points. She again holds to love.

A double fault from Schiavone doesn’t rattle the Italian and she soon leads 4-2.

The American is starting to find her rhythm, winning her second straight service game but her first to love.

A couple of good points from Vandeweghe buoy the American crowd and Schiavone is taken to deuce for the first time on her serve. The youngster producing her first clean winner of the match which even the Italian applauds.

Schiavone produces her second and third aces of the match to consolidate her break.

First serves are key for Vandeweghe, a couple in and the American claws her way back to 30-all. Schiavone wins a hawk-eye challenge to force a point to be replayed and it’s another break for the Italian.

Schiavone secures the set on her first set point in 34 minutes.

Vandeweghe wins her second game much to the delight of the American crowd.

Schiavone showing her class, producing crosscourt winners all over the place. So far the Italian has lost just two points on serve.

An injection of pace from Schiavone has the American moving all over the court to take the game to deuce. Vandeweghe’s long forehand handing a second break to Schiavone.

Good serves from Schiavone gives the Italian a quick game to love.

Vandeweghe starts well again, racing to 30-0 before she nets a simple forehand. A battle of the volleys ensues, which the American wins to give her game point which she loses when she sends a forehand wide. Two unreturnable serves later and Vandeweghe has a game on the board.

Schiavone produces a solid service game to hold for 2-0.

Vandeweghe *0-1 Schiavone

Vandeweghe gets play underway with an ace, following it up with another unreturnable serve before Schiavone gets into the game, producing a couple of winners before she claims the game after Vandeweghe produces two double faults.
