CAIRO, EGYPT: The final positions in the round-robin stage of Fed Cup by BNP Paribas Europe/Africa Zone Group II were decided on Friday with South Africa and Georgia taking the top spots.
The two nations in each of Pool A and Pool B progressing to tomorrow’s promotion play-offs were in action against each other on Thursday for the right to play the second-placed team in the opposing group.
In Pool A, South Africa had a comfortable win, 3-0, against Montenegro as Ilze Hattingh and Nathalie Grandin once again showed their prowess against lesser-ranked players in the singles rubbers before Madrie Le Roux and Lynn Kiro took to the court in the doubles to complete the victory in style.
They will now play Turkey who were beaten by the same scoreline when they faced Georgia. The Georgian team will now face Montenegro in their promotion play-off tie tomorrow. They will go into that on a high with Sofia Shapatava and Anna Tatishvili both having won in straight sets in the singles and their doubles pairing of Tatishvili alongside Sofia Kvatsabia doing likewise.
Finland were awarded third place in Pool A after they defeated Denmark 2-1 despite having lost the opening rubber. Pila Suomalainen was the star for the Finish team as she beat Karen Barbat 62 64 in the second singles rubber and then played with Emma Laine to defeat Barbat and Malou Ejdesgaard in the doubles, 62 46 75.
Finland must now repeat their victory of today in tomorrow’s relegation play-off if they are to remain in Zone Group II in 2013. They will face Norway who were on the wrong end of a whitewash against Latvia, the latter now facing Denmark in the other relegation play-off.
