Europe/Africa Zone Group III: Saturday

MATCH REPORT

Nour ABBES (TUN)

CAIRO, EGYPT: In Fed Cup by BNP Paribas Europe/Africa Zone Group III the teams from Pool B proved themselves to be the victors in the promotion play-offs as Lithuania and Tunisia came out on top against Morocco and Ireland respectively.

Morocco were looking for an immediate return to Zone Group II and had looked set to make that a reality all week having not lost a tie but Lithuania came back from losing the first rubber to extinguish the dreams of the North African nation.

Fatima El Allami took nearly three hours to defeat a player ranked some 400 places below her in the form of Joana Eidukonyte in the first rubber, 67(5) 62 64 and the struggle was to continue for the Moroccon’s when Fatyha Berjane was dispatched with ease by Lina Stancuite 61 61.

With the Moroccan No.1, Nadia Lalami, absent from the tie today it was left to El Allami and Bahia Mouhtassine to try and turn the tie in their favour but it was not to be as Stanciute paired with Justina Mikulskyte to give Lithuania passage to promotion, 64 75.

In the other promotion play-off the pairing of Nour Abbes and Ons Jabeur, who have been in fine form all week, once again notched up singles victories to give Tunisia a place in Europe/Africa Zone Group II for the coming season.

The Irish were able to restore some pride in the dead rubber as Amy Bowtell, who was defeated by Jabeur in the singles, and Jenny Claffey gained a modicum of revenge against the Tunisian pair and finished the week in a respectable fashion in joint-third place.

The lesser placings were also decided on Saturday as Egypt defeated Armenia and Moldova ended on a high beating Malta for the two victorious nations to end in fifth-equal position. Cyprus also managed back-to-back wins in Fed Cup for the first time when they defeated Kenya 3-0 to end in ninth having seen off Namibia yesterday.
