MEDELLIN, COLOMBIA: In the big match-up on the final day in Medellin, Canada and Brazil met to decide who would gain the chance to earn promotion out of Americas Zone Group I.
Brazil’s Paula Cristina Goncalves started inconspicuously, dropping the first set 6-0 against Canada’s Sharon Fichman, but she soon got some momentum on her side and won the next two sets 6-0 and 6-4 to claim the first point of the rubber for the South Americans.
“When I started losing I went to the bathroom at the end of the first set and had some time to myself, I started to breathe and visualise what I should be doing in the match. This was my first time playing Fed Cup and I was very nervous but I played well.”
The second match saw Canada’s Eugenie Bouchard draw the scores level with a 62 62 victory over Teliana Pereira to leave it up to a decisive doubles.
Gabriela Dabrowski and Sharon Fichman were charged with defeating Pereira and Pigossi, which they did in one hour and 50 minutes to leave Canada declared champions.
At the other end of the scale, Chile and Peru have been relegated from Americas I after falling to Venezuela and Mexico.
