The ITF announced today that, due to the devastating earthquake and tsunami in Japan, it has postponed the Fed Cup by BNP Paribas World Group II play-off tie between Japan and Argentina, originally due to be played in Tokyo on 16-17 April. The tie will now be held in Japan on 16-17 July, two weeks after Wimbledon, with the venue still to be confirmed.
The decision was taken by the Fed Cup Committee following discussions with the Japan Tennis Association (JTA), Argentina Tennis Association (AAT) and WTA.
ITF President Francesco Ricci Bitti said: “In light of these dreadful and exceptional circumstances, we felt it was important to give the JTA the opportunity still to host the tie and for Fed Cup to play its very small part in the healing process of a nation. We are grateful to both nations, Japan and Argentina, for their cooperation.”
