The team nominations for the Fed Cup by BNP Paribas World Group II play-off tie between Japan and Argentina, taking place in Kobe on 16-17 July, have been submitted to the ITF.
Japan’s top player Ayumi Morita, the world No. 46, leads the challenge for the hosts alongside Misaki Doi, Kurumi Nara and the experienced Rika Fujiwara.
Argentina are missing a few key names, including their highest ranked player Gisela Dulko, so Maria Irigoyen, Mailen Auroux, Aranza Salut and Vanesa Furlanetto are the flag bearers this time.
The tie was originally scheduled for April but the devastating earthquake and tsunami in Japan in March led to its postponement, as ITF President Francesco Ricci Bitti explained at the time.
“In light of these dreadful and exceptional circumstances,” he said, “we felt it was important to give the JTA the opportunity still to host the tie and for Fed Cup to play its very small part in the healing process of a nation. We are grateful to both nations, Japan and Argentina, for their cooperation.”
The loser of this tie faces relegation to Zone Group I in 2012, Asia/Oceania for Japan or Americas for Argentina.
