MOSCOW, RUSSIA: She might not remember where she keeps all of her Fed Cup trophies, but Svetlana Kuznetsova knows one thing for sure, and that’s how much she wants to win one more.

With three Fed Cup titles to her name already, the 26-year-old Russian could join the likes of Margaret Court and Martina Navratilova on the list of the competition’s all-time greats should Russia triumph against Czech Republic this weekend.

She would also become Fed Cup’s most successful active player and although she couldn’t remember whether she had ever been presented with the third of her Fed Cup trophies – the first is in her house in Spain and the second lives with her parents in St Petersburg – she explained that it was not silverware that kept her going but rather the feeling of representing her country.

“It’s great the support of your home crowd and the support of your team and you perform for your Russian Tennis Federation,” she explained. “When I play singles tournaments I feel like I play to defend on my own and here it’s more country and more everyone so it’s a real honour to play for Russia.”

Kuznetsova also revealed that winning Fed Cup was just as hard as winning a Grand Slam when she said: “When you play Fed Cup, when you play Grand Slam, you are at your maximum. You don’t say ‘it’s ok, take it easy’, no, you do your best, it doesn’t matter whether it’s a Grand Slam or Fed Cup.”

And there is no reason to believe Russia’s most decorated Fed Cup player plans on calling it a day any time soon. Kuznetsova could, therefore, have a very realistic chance of becoming one of the most successful players in the history of the competition, perhaps overtaking the likes of Spain’s Conchita Martinez and Arantxa Sanchez-Vicario.

But then she wouldn’t care about that – just so long as she keeps on getting picked and continues to perform for her country, that’s all that matters.
