CHIASSO, SWITZERLAND: When players from both teams for this weekend’s Fed Cup by BNP Paribas World Group play-off tie between Switzerland and Australia gathered outside Chiasso Town Hall after the draw on Friday, it was difficult to imagine them playing a few days of tennis in anything else than the glorious conditions that bathed the southern Swiss town.
A plunge in temperature and more than 24 hours of non-stop rain later, however, referee Mihaela Testiban of Romania had no choice but to decide play would not take place on the outdoor clay court at the Tennis Club Chiasso on Saturday.
As a result, Sunday sees a significantly rejigged schedule of play. The day will begin earlier than planned with Australian team No. 1 Sam Stosur taking on Swiss No. 2 Stefanie Voegele at 09:30 local time, followed by Romina Oprandi of Switzerland against Aussie Jarmila Gajdosova. Time and weather permitting, the reverse singles will be played later in the day.
Should the play-off not reach a conclusion on Sunday, any remaining singles rubbers and the doubles match between the Swiss pair of Timea Bacsinszky and Amra Sadikovic and their Australian counterparts Casey Dellacqua and youngster Ashleigh Barty will take place on the tie’s reserve day, Monday.
It’s impossible to say if the cooler conditions and compacted schedule will favour either team more when play eventually does get under way, but with more rain forecast for Sunday, it might be later rather than sooner that we find out.
