Cuba, the top seeds for the Junior Fed Cup North/Central American & Caribbean Pre-Qualifying event in La Libertad, El Salvador, emerged victorious when they took on unseeded Puerto Rico in the final.
Amanda Gomez got the top seeds off to the perfect start when she defeated Paola Maza 61 64, and, when Claudia Carrera won the first set of her rubber against Chantal Martinez 6-1, it appeared as though Cuba would ease to victory.
Martinez, however, would have something to say about that. She showed excellent fighting spirit to take the second set 6-3 before taking the deciding set 7-5 to level the tie at 1-1.
This then forced the final into a deciding doubles rubber. Cuba's two singles players teamed up in the doubles, whereas Puerto Rico brought in Clary Rodriguez to play with Martinez. It was the Cubans who triumphed, taking the rubber 62 61.
This means that Cuba have earned a spot in the North/Central American & Caribbean Final Qualifying event in Montreal on May 2-4, with the ultimate goal being a place in the Junior Fed Cup by BNP Paribas Finals on 24-29 September.
