Roberta Vinci has never been defeated in a Fed Cup by BNP Paribas doubles rubber. In fact, with a win-loss ratio of 13-0, she holds the Italian record for the most number of victories.
This form may well see Corrado Barazzutti, Italy’s captain, call upon Vinci for what potentially could be a crucial doubles rubber in the Fed Cup by BNP Paribas Final against USA.
Should this be the case, Vinci might pair up with Francesca Schiavone. This is a partnership that has served the Italians well in the past – none more so than in the 2006 Final against Belgium.
Playing in Charleroi’s Spiroudome, the score was standing at 2-2 after the singles rubbers. Step up Vinci and Schiavone, who, aided by a third set withdrawal, overcame Justine Henin and Kirsten Flipkens to clinch Italy’s only Fed Cup title.
If Vinci’s services are required in this year’s Final, she will likely find herself on the other side of the net to Liezel Huber, the world’s top ranked doubles player – a fixture that would put her unbeaten record to the test.
Vinci, however, is a seasoned campaigner and has a wealth of Fed Cup experience to call upon. Should the Final go down to the wire, it will be an intriguing match-up. Don’t rule out the Italians!
