OSTRAVA, CZECH REPUBLIC: Czech Republic defeated Australia 4-0 but the tie was a lot closer than the scoreline suggests, with five of the nine sets from the weekend being resolved by tiebreaks. Unfortunately for Australia, they didn't win any of the five.
On the first day, Jarmila Gajdosova put up a strong showing against Petra Kvitova but the Czech prevailed in straight sets. The second rubber on the opening day saw Sam Stosur take on Lucie Safarova. This was even closer than the first rubber, with Safarova winning in two tiebreaks to put Czech Republic 2-0 up.
Australia needed to win all three matches on day two to progress to the semifinals, and an upset appeared on the cards when Sam Stosur had match point against Petra Kvitova, but the Czech fought back, winning the second set tiebreak and going on to win the rubber and take the tie. The Czechs then won the dead doubles rubber in straight sets to complete the 4-0 victory.
