USA inflicted a painful home defeat for Australia, with Madison Keys defeating Daria Gavrilova before both Christina McHale and Coco Vandeweghe claimed wins against Samantha Stosur. The result - the team's fourth defeat in its last five ties - sees Australia stay in World Group II for another year.
Australia are third on the all-time champions list, having won the title seven times in 1964, 1965, 1968, 1970, 1971, 1973 and 1974. Australia are one of only four nations to have competed in every Fed Cup.
In 1968, Aussie duo Margaret Court and Kerry Melville went into the record books for playing the most number of games in a doubles rubber (51), beating Winnie Shaw and Virginia Wade 97 36 1412.
