Boosted by the influence of former world No. 1 Victoria Azarenka who won both of the singles rubbers she contested, Belarus won all four of its ties in Europe/Africa Zone Group I to book a spot in April’s World Group II play-offs. The Belarusians saw off Georgia, Bulgaria and Portugal in their group, before Azarenka sealed their spot in the play-offs by defeating Heather Watson 64 61 to secure a 2-0 promotional play-off win over Great Britain.
Belarus's best performances to date have been reaching World Group II in 1999 and 2012. Prior to 1991, Belarusian players competed under the USSR flag.
Belarus’s 5-0 victory over Estonia in 2011 set a new Fed Cup record for the most comprehensive win in a best-of-five rubbers tie (losing just 13 games).
