Italy defeated USA 3-2 and in so doing inflicted Serena Williams' first-ever Fed Cup loss in either a rubber or a tie. With Williams having won both her singles rubbers, the tie went to a decisive doubles and Sara Errani partnered hometown hero Flavia Pennetta to a memorable victory in Brindisi, defeating Williams and Alison Riske 60 63 to win a fifth straight tie against USA.
Italy are one of only four nations to compete in every Fed Cup, and have been crowned champions on four occasions - in 2006, 2009, 2010 and 2013. In 2006, Italy became the first nation to win the title without playing a home tie, since the home-and-away format was adopted in 1995.
Roberta Vinci is the record holder in Fed Cup for winning the most doubles rubbers without defeat. Her ongoing run is currently at 18-0.
