Russia have to defeat Argentina to maintain their position amongst the top eight nation next year with the loser dropping into World Group II. Russia have not been below the elite World Group in 16 years and have won both their previous ties against the South American nation.

Russia took an inexperienced team without a single player ranked inside the top 150 to Hobart and fell to a 4-0 defeat to Australia in the World Group first round. Irina Khromacheva, Veronika Kudermetova and Victoria Kan all failed to win a set in the three singles rubbers, combining for just 11 games, before Khromacheva and Valeria Solovyeva also lost in straight sets in the dead fifth rubber.
Russia have been crowned champions four times - in 2004, 2005, 2007 and 2008. Prior to their first title, they had lost in the Final on four occasions, and they have since lost another two Finals, in 2011 and 2013. From 1968 to 1991, Russian players represented USSR and then CIS in 1992.
