Russia will compete in World Group II in 2017. The draw will be made in June.

The four-time champions needed a win at home to Belarus to maintain its place in the World Group. Level at 1-1 after the first day, Victoria Azarenka defeated Darya Kasatkina to give Belarus the advantage before Aliaksandra Sasnovich beat Margarita Gasparyan to relegate Russia. 2017 will be the first year in almost two decades that the team has competed outside the top tier.
Russia have been crowned champions four times - in 2004, 2005, 2007 and 2008. Prior to their first title, they had lost in the Final on four occasions, and they have since lost another three Finals, in 2011, 2013 and 2015. From 1968 to 1991, Russian players represented USSR and then CIS in 1992.
