Switzerland travel to Brazil in the World Group II play-offs as they aim to extend their stay at the level beyond three years. The nations have met twice before in the competition with each side claiming one victory. Switzerland won the most recent meeting in 1990 by a 3-0 scoreline with the South American nation picking up victory in the first meeting back in 1972.

Switzerland lost narrowly to France as Belinda Bencic won both her singles matches and alongside Timea Bacsinszky pushed Alize Cornet and Kristina Mladenovic all the way in the deciding doubles rubber but came up just short as the visitors dropped to a 3-2 loss in Paris.
Switzerland were runners-up in 1998, narrowly losing to Spain 3-2. The team of Martina Hingis and Patty Schnyder led the Spaniards 2-1, but slipped to defeat in the deciding doubles rubber.
