Slovak Republic face a trip to Russia in the World Group semifinals. The two nations have faced off on two previous occasions, with Russia winning both 3-2. However, the last time they played was in 2001. Slovak Republic are making an appearance in the semifinal for the first time since 2002, when they went on to win the competition.
Last tie 9-10 February 2013
Slovak Republic defeated Serbia 3-2 in Serbia. Serbia were without their top two players which gave Slovak Republic the advantage. Daniela Hantuchova got Slovak Republic off to a perfect start, upsetting Serbian No. 1 Bojana Jovanovski. However, the Slovaks suffered a huge setback when Dominika Cibulkova was forced to retire in the second rubber. Jana Cepelova was the player chosen to replace her, and she won a marathon match against Jovanovski, prevailing 11-9 in the final set. Hantuchova then sealed victory with a win over Vesna Dolonc. Slovak Republic then gave away the doubles on a walkover, meaning the tie finished 3-2.
History
Slovak Republic were crowned champions in 2002, their only title to date. Prior to 1994, Slovak players represented Czechoslovakia.
