The latest Fed Cup Nations Ranking list has been published following last weekend’s results in the Fed Cup by BNP Paribas World Group and World Group II first rounds, and Zone Group events.
Italy has maintained top spot following victory over Ukraine. Flavia Pennetta and Francesca Schiavone spearheaded the defending champion to a 4-1 win in Kharkiv.
Alona Bondarenko gave the home team hope by defeating Schiavone in the opening rubber but Corrado Barazzutti’s side is not easy to beat, and rallied to win the next four matches.
Russia and USA have held on to second and third places in the rankings respectively. The two nations will meet in the semifinals (24-25 April) when the Americans will be the hosts.
Russia contested the tie of the weekend in Belgrade, clinching a 3-2 win over Serbia with the deciding doubles rubber. Svetlana Kuznetsova and Alisa Kleybanova, who also won one singles match each, were the triumphant pair.
USA had an easier passage in Lievin, beating France 4-1. Bethanie Mattek-Sands and Melanie Oudin wrapped-up proceedings early on day two after winning the opening three singles rubbers.
Czech Republic is now ranked fourth on the list, leapfrogging Spain. The Czechs claimed a 3-2 victory over Germany to set up a trip to Italy in the semifinals.
Lower down the rankings, Belgium improved four places to sixth and Slovenia, having progressed in Lisbon to reach the World Group II Play-offs, jumped 13 places to No. 27.
