Next Tie versus Italy: World Group, 05 February 2011
Next tie Australia will host Italy in the World Group first round in February, having gained promotion from World Group II in 2010. Australia has never lost to Italy, although their last meeting was back in 1988 and the Italians have become a major Fed Cup force in recent years.
Last tie Australia recorded a 5-0 whitewash over Ukraine in the World Group play-offs in Kharkiv. Anastasia Rodionova set the tone for the visitors in the opening rubber - defeating Alona Bondarenko - before Samantha Stosur clinched two decisive singles wins.
History Australia is second on the all-time champions list, having won the title seven times - in 1964, 1965, 1968, 1970, 1971, 1973 and 1974. Australia is one of only four nations to have competed in every Fed Cup. In 1968, Aussie duo Margaret Court and Kerry Melville went into the record books for playing the most number of games in a doubles rubber (51), beating Winnie Shaw and Virginia Wade 97 36 1412.
