World Beach Games officials raising the bar

News Article

ANOC World Beach Games beach tennis referee Massimo Morelli takes us throug the worldwide officiating operation on the ground at Karata Beach in Doha.

"It’s myself, one assistant referee, plus 10 technical officials from all over the world, and we also have 16 national officials provided by the Qatar Tennis Federation," he explains. "There are people from Italy, Brazil, Japan, Ecuador, Russia.

"They are basically tennis officials who over the years had the ability to gain beach tennis experience. We have two bronze badges, some white badges and others with national federation experience. This gives us the ability to put two line umpires on each court – the biggest crew ever sent by the ITF to a beach tennis event.

"I’m sure the ITF would like for the number of officials in beach tennis to improve, and that they train as a line judge and a chair umpire – this is our goal for the future."
